Food seems to be a recurring theme for everybody, no matter where you come from. In South Africa we always have a 'braai'. It is something like an American barbeque, but very different. We eat a LOT of meat and very little else. Salads mainly.
In my own family we have a tradition that you are allowed to have chocolate cake for breakfast on your birthday.
Congratulations on your blogoversary.

Congratulations on your 2nd year of 'Just an Inkling'!!!!! When I saw the picture of the prize package the first thing that came to mind was how much my grandpa loved ice cream!!!!! I remember one time I was visiting my grandparents and he asked me if I wanted to go for a drive 'down town' with him. He ended up taking me to a town nearby - about 15 minutes away. And we went to the ice cream store on the waterfront and we got sundaes and ate them and then went back home to my grandma and parents wondering what took us so long 'down town'. What was supposed to have been a 5-10 minute drive was about 1/2 hour!!!!! That was in the days before cell phones when you really could 'get away' from people and things!!!!

Congrats on your 2nd blogoversary ... and I love the idea of a themed candy giveaway. We usually try not to celebrate with food, however I do celebrate small victories in life with a diet vanilla Dr. Pepper with extra ice from Sonic. Thanks for the chance to win.

The main way our family celebrates is with food! Any excuse to eat is good for us :) We love to have potlucks, and we all bring what we're good at making. I'm usually in charge of dessert.

Wow...how is it I have not been here in so long? Oh right, my kids and job...don't they know I need to blurf? Ha ha! Thanks for the heads-up...I just got around to linking it now! Yikes! I hope you have lots of fun...good for you with sticking at it for two years!

My fav way to celebrate with food is really in the prep of such. My kids are big contributors and we spend a great deal of time before birthdays, Christmas, school activities, etc. just making stuff. We have lots of fun making chocolate suckers and different types of cupcakes for the kids' school friends...they are king/queen for the day!

Great theme for a candy...just love your collection of items you found! Cheers!

Food is at the center of just about every family gathering we have. We have this one dish called Golden Glow--lemon Jello, pineapple, and grated carrots. It sounds not so great, but everyone loves it!

That's a lot of yummy candy! Thanks for offering it up! Stop by my blog for my BIG giveaway, too...

As with most families, gatherings and ocassions always surround us with food! BBQ's, birthdays, weddings, and gatherings for the holidays...lots and lots of food. Even fond memories of my childhood include when we used to go to Dresser Hill Icecream stand and have icecream after supper with my family. There were SOOOO many flavors to chose from! :)

Happy Blogaversary! Is there any other way to celebrate than with food? When my kids were younger, birthdays would include a dinner of their favorite dishes. Now that they're all grown and out of the house, birthdays involve gathering for brunch somewhere. As the family has grown, it's become more fun to gather at my house, where we can eat and hang out without worrying about running up a big tab at a restaurant.

Thanks for the chance to win the goodies! I always enjoy checking out your blog.

Congratulations on the 2 year blogoversary.
I think food is what holidays are all about! We celebrate every holiday with my husbands family (my family lives out of town). Everyone will bring a dish or two, and before you know it, the counters are filled with homemade dishes. Pure bliss!

Amy said...

Most holidays, we have food favorites... things that we make year after year. Several years ago, though, we decided to shake up our Christmas traditions. Now my Mom and I spend all year collecting fun new recipes that we want to try and then we get to spend Christmas together in the kitchen trying out a new menu. You'd think that holidays would be a stressful time to try new stuff, but it turns out that there is always so much food, if any one recipe is a bust, you hardly notice :-). All part of the fun of spending time together!

Congratulations on your blogoversary! Thanks for sharing all the great inspiration and the super fun blog candy!

When my kids were little I would make them a special cake on their birthdays - decorated in the theme of whatever they were into at the time, and now I make my DH the meal of his choice on his birthday. Since I am not a really regular cook, he appreciates it even more.

Congrats on your blogaversary--thanks for being so generous. Like so many others, our family always had food at every celebration. My mom was a wonderful cook and would chose the favorite dishes of the person we were honoring. When I was the "star" the meal always included my favorite swiss steak, mashed potatoes along with green beans. Dessert was always the best--homemade angel food cake with peanut butter icing--really it is just awesome!

Every time my family gets together, there's food involved! We cook for days and there's food afterward for days! When we have a 'pitch-in' kind of thing, I make sure that I have enough for everyone in case no one brings anything. I hate not having enough! Wow, talking about all this food has made me hungry!

Congratulations on 2 years, that's awesome!

We celebrate every birthday with a fabulous feast. For all birthdays in our family (parents and my 2 sisters as well as my 2 kids and hubby) we have a birthday celebration of that person's favorite foods, it's awesome!!

Heidi Brawley said...

Wow! Congratulations on your anniversary!!!! Umm.. our family likes to have a little "Happy Hour" onFridays after work. Everyone is asked to bring a dish of some sort to share. It is always quite a variety of food for all especially since there are kiddos there too!!! Congrats again!! ~Heidi

Happy Blogaversary! I just love your creative and inspiring projects. Now you know how to celebrate without food! This is one yummy stamping food group! LOL
My DH loves to celebrate anything as long as he can smoke some kind of meat. We just love to get together with friends and family and just have a good time. Thanks so much for a chance at all this fun fun celebration candy.

We always celebrate with food...for July 4th, it's barbecued burgers, for birthdays, it's the birthday person's choice for dinner...oh, and usually breakfast in bed. For Mother's Day and Father's Day, it's breakfast in bed!!

Congrats on 2 years!! How exciting it is to celebrate!! The paper you selected is fun!
Our holidays were always celebrated at my grandparents house. We had so much fun playing with the cousins (12 of us kids in all) , eating food at the big table outside and my best memories was the chocolate cake with fudge frosting that my Nana always made and it is wonderful!! Also every Sunday after church we would go to Nana's house and there would be that wonderful cake that she had hidden in the cupboard or in the oven. We never got tired of it and She made each one of us our very own cake for our birthday. Nana passed away last year but all of us girls continue the birthday tradition by spreading the joy and making happy faces in our children.

My husband's family has a first birthday tradition that we've continued with our family. We have a traditional birthday part, but when it's time for cake, there's two of them. The regular, and then a smaller one just for the birthday baby. They get to just plow in to it to their hearts content.
thanks for the chance to win!

Happy Blogversary (don't you love made up words like that)...Food is always a part of family gatherings around our house. Usually I'm the one cooking it too but I love cooking so it's not all that bad and those who don't cook have to do clean-up so I'm happy with that.

Congrats on 2 years! We celebrate with food on special occasions. The biggest one is Christmas morning we have a yummy cheese, egg and sausage souffle that we prepare the night before and it bakes in the am while we are opening the presents :)

We have a new little family and we just started "celebrating" with food for holidays. I try to make dinner every night and the three of us sit down at the table to eat. Alex is still experimenting with food, but he is eating everything, well, except vegetables!

Happy 2nd Blogoversary!!!
My family LOVES Potato Salad...but not just any Potato Salad...my Mom's Potato Salad, it is a staple at ALL summer family gatherings!!!

Anonymous said...

Ditto to Happy second Blogoversary it must feel good to have the 2nd year now...congrats.

When anyone in our family has a birthday I make a butter cake with chocolate icing. It's not fancy but if I don't do that cake they all feel hurt like I forgot them. No store bought cake will do. It has to be that Duncan Hines yellow cake mix and nothing else will do. I think it must be a tradition now. So I always have to have a box of that cake mix on hand...At 76 I'm still glad to do it.
Thanks for this opportunity for some candy.

Happy 2nd Blogaversary! Wow, we are having a big family gathering this weekend and we are always talking about what food to serve. One of the fave dishes is one my aunt used to make , "Company Baked Beans" that was always a big hit! I am traveling to the gathering but I just might make those up and put them in my cooler!

Happy 2nd Blogaversary! We always have food at our celebrations, but a DQ ice cream cake is highly requested for my son's birthday. And since, he has a summer birthday, we usually get one to keep everyone happy! (Ice cream cake in the middle of winter snow storms usually gives me the chills!) Thanks for the chance to win!

Congrats on your blogoversary! As for food and celebrations, our family seems to like cookies better than cake so for birthdays I usually buy or make a huge, pizza-sized chocolate chip cookie and decorate it like a cake. Add ice cream and you are set! YUMMY!

Congrats on your blog anniversary! My family doesn't need any excuse for any celebration for food fiesta ... whenever we feel like it, we can come up with a theme or just crave for something and the whole family will be notified to gather and bring something for potluck. It always ends up being a feast of all sorts. Its a family tradition we intend to keep for a long time to come:)!

My family is pretty small (6). The special celebration my family still celebrates is Christmas eve. We have oyster stew. My sons do not care for that so I started them with smoked fish. So whenever we get together on Christmas eve, it's oyster stew and smoked fish.
Thanks for the chance to win some terrific candy!

Our family celebrates all holidays together at my Mom's with massive meals including ham, turkey and mashed potatoes and stuffing. If the soiree is at my house it's lasagna or chicken monterrey with german potato salad. I guess we all have our niches, eh?

Congratulations on 2 years!!!
Food - is there any other way to celebrate? We love pot-lucks ... it's always amazing at the randomness of them however it all fits together so neatly!!and no one ever goes away hungry! My daughter is 38-she loves hot lobster made by her stepdad so that is her Bday, Christmas, and any other special event special food.
Awesome "candy"!

does ranging in front of the fridge count!!! Seriously, in the first years of our marriage and kids we mad the special dinner...whatever kid of homemade cake (carrot cake, banana cake, strawberry shortcake, raisin cake, etc) the birthdayee wanted. However since my mother-in-law was a supreme baker and she is no longer with us we do it differently. The "birthdayee" now gets to have a different choice...RED LOBSTER OR OUTBACK!!!
It is still a lot of fun sitting around a special meal and "roasting" the birthdayee with stories of remember when (unless of course you are the birthdayee!!!) And best of all no cleanup!!!
blessings to you'patti

Wow...just found your blog since you made the ODBD customer card of the day. You are very talented!

Growing up, we did not have much money, so birthday celebrations were small. But mom, who has always been a great cook, would make ANYTHING we wanted for our birthday dinner and dessert. To this day, she puts lots of love into cooking our meals....and she does this for holidays too. She sometimes feels bad that she cannot give "more"...but her cooking is worth more than I can say!!

Congratulations! We celebrate someone's birthday always with his/her favorite food. But a few years ago my mother made my sister's favorite food (which I don't like) on my birthday. It was a small mistake, but I remember I couldn't laugh with it that day. Since then I always remember her in time what food I want on my birthday. Here's my link . Thanks for a chance to win! Greetings from Belgium, Annelies

Celebrations in our family definitely involve food and lots and lots of desserts. When we have a celebration it's usually with family and friends who bring whatever they can (very yummy home cooked food or dessert). It's a time for sharing -- food and memories.

Happy 2nd anniversary of your blog! Your work is so fresh and inspiring! At our gatherings every family seems to have become connected with a special homemade dish so it's potluck! There's always way too many desserts so we cut them up in small pieces so everyone can have a sample of each one! laura j

Congrats to you on your 2nd year! Time seems to go by so quickly. I can think of several occasions based around food. Summer time is fun with family picnics, church picnics, etc and the common foods there. On thing my husband and I like to do is if we are traveling somewhere is to try out a local 'dish' of the area (if there is one). Thanks for the opportunity to be the lucky winner of this awsome RAK! Good luck everyone!

Thanks so much for the chance to win! In my family there's no celebration without food.
For example last year for my birthday my mom made funnel cake, because she knows how much I love it and that I didn't eat it for a long time.

Hello, just found your blog through Serendipity stamps and signed up to receive it in my inbox. Love the shell wreath card-wonderful colors. I have looked at that stamp, as I love shells, but never thought about a Christmas card!

Thanks for a chance to win the blog candy. My family loves Thanksgiving-a relaxing holiday spent with family. I host the meal at my house and always have to make Cranberry Salad, at Christmas too.

CRANBERRY SALAD
*1 large can crushed pineapple, undrained
*1 small package Raspberry Jello
*1 can whole berry cranberry sauce
*1 can mandarin oranges, drained
*1 cup red grapes, halved if large
*1 apple, peeled and diced
*Celery,diced, amount to your taste
Put undrained pineapple in large skillet and bring to boil. Remove from stove and add dry raspberry jello. Add whole berry cranberry sauce and mix well with pineapple and jello. Add other ingredients, mix gently but well. Pour into nice, glass bowl and refrigerate. Enjoy!
